We also check for fishing line, worn keyways, or signs of electrolysis while we’re down there. Not sure if it’s time? Just ask—we’re always happy to take a look. With Scuba Sam’s propeller replacement, it’s quick, clean, and done right the first time.

How We Change Props

We start by identifying the right tools for your specific prop and shaft setup. Every job begins with a careful inspection to check for corrosion, fishing line, or damage around the hub. Once we’re set, we use a proper underwater prop puller to safely remove the existing propeller without stressing the shaft, strut, or keyway.

If the prop is stuck, we apply controlled force and protective techniques to free it without damage. We then clean the shaft face, check the key and nut for wear, and install the new prop with marine-grade grease and a secure torque setting. Everything is double-checked for alignment and proper fit.

Before surfacing, we inspect surrounding hardware and fittings, and confirm that the install meets both performance and safety standards. It’s fast, professional, and done entirely underwater—no need to haul your boat.

When You Should Replace Your Boat Propeller

  • Damage

    Visible Damage
Look for cracks, chips, dents, or bent blades. Even minor damage can cause vibration, reduce speed, and hurt overall performance.

    Corrosion
Saltwater wears down propellers over time. Corrosion weakens the blades and lowers efficiency. When corrosion is advanced, replacement is the best option.

    Loose Key
A loose or damaged keyway causes vibration and can ruin the propeller hub. Poor installation or worn parts often lead to this issue, making timely replacement crucial.

  • Performance Issues

    Decreased Speed and Acceleration
A damaged or inefficient propeller can’t convert engine power into thrust properly, causing noticeable drops in speed and acceleration.

    Excessive Vibration
Bent or misaligned blades create imbalances that lead to uncomfortable vibration and can harm your engine and drivetrain over time.

    Poor Handling
Damage to the propeller affects how your boat steers, making it less responsive and harder to control on the water.

    Incorrect Pitch
A prop with too high or too low pitch strains the engine and reduces efficiency. This often shows up as slow acceleration or an engine that over-revs.

  • An Incorrect Prop is Installed

    Increased Fuel Consumption
A inefficient propeller creates extra drag, making your engine work harder and burn more fuel.

    Mismatched Propeller
If you’ve upgraded your engine or changed your boat’s load, your old prop might not be the right fit anymore—leading to less power and higher fuel use.

    Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel
Aluminum props wear out faster and are more prone to damage than stainless steel, especially if you use your boat frequently or in rough conditions.

Hauling your boat out just to change a prop is costly, time-consuming, and usually unnecessary. Our underwater service keeps everything simple. We handle the entire process right at your dock or mooring—no yard appointments, no lift fees, and no delays.

Ideal for Busy Schedules
This option is perfect for boats on a tight marina timeline, captains prepping for a trip, or owners who need a fast swap without disrupting their plans.

Seasonal or Emergency Swaps
Whether it’s a last-minute issue or a planned performance upgrade, underwater prop changes are efficient, safe, and stress-free.

Skip the Haul-Out
We get the job done without lifting your boat out of the water—saving you time, money, and hassle.

A Full-Scope Approach

We take the time to inspect the full propeller shaft assembly while we’re down there. That includes checking for fishing line wrapped around the shaft, wear on the key and cotter pin, and any signs of galvanic corrosion or electrolysis. These small issues can go unnoticed until they cause major damage, but we catch them early so you don’t have to deal with a bigger problem later.

Our underwater inspection during every diver propeller service gives you more than just a quick fix—it gives you peace of mind. Whether you're changing props for performance, repair, or emergency response, we treat every job like it's part of something bigger: keeping your boat running right.

“Sam provides the most reliable and cost effective treatment for your boat that is in the water. He has been cleaning my boat for over 2 years and in fact cleans most of the boats in my community. Terrific service.”
